What is the East Coast Greenway? The East Coast Greenway (ECG) is a 2,900 mile long multi-purpose trail that stretches from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida. The goal of the East Coast Greenway Alliance is to provide a safe place for walkers, runners, and bikers to travel, get to work, and explore their neighborhoods. To that end, the ECG connects to dozens of local trails in each state.
Connecticut is fortunate to have an extensive greenway system that connects Hartford to New Haven, Bridgeport, and Stamford. In addition to these urban routes, there are miles of rural trails that carry riders through forested areas and farmland. Click here for a map of the trails in Connecticut. |
Hartford Bike ShareWhile walkers and runners are encouraged to use the greenway, longer distances may require a bicycle—and bicycles are not convenient for everyone to own. Hartford is currently developing a bike share program, which would focus on providing bicycles for mostly urban settings. As a public transportation option, bike sharing is extremely flexible—people can pick up a bike whenever they choose, instead of depending on a bus or train schedule. The bikes are stored in docks, and can be left at a different dock than they were picked up at. While the program is not available for Hartford residents and visitors yet, it is under active development and should be up and running in the near future.
