Choosing a siteSustainable decision-making starts before construction begins with the selection of the building site. Some of the main considerations for choosing a sustainable site include:
|
BrownfieldsA brownfield begins as an area of land that was, at one point, used in manufacturing or a similar field and may been contaminated with hazardous materials. The property becomes a brownfield when it is redeveloped and cleaned up to be used again for another purpose. Developing on brownfields is doubly environmentally friendly: dangerous substances are either removed from the environment or secured as to not have an impact, and a new building is created without having to develop natural land. The Capewell Lofts are an example of a brownfield, as the site used to be home to the Capewell Horse Nail Company and was (minimally) contaminated with oily stains from when the factory was in use.
